On the Sepik River in northern PNG, a native tradition is the “crocodile” initiation of young men.   After a male reaches puberty, he must endure the initiation rite of cutting the skin of the upper body. The cuts are then rubbed with clay and ashes so when they heal, they are raised scars like crocodile scales.  I was glad to hear that the tradition is not as widely practiced as in the past.
